Cumbrian football and speedway forge a link
Carlisle United and Workington Comets Speedway are very proud to announce that they have reached agreement to work in partnership for the benefit of both clubs and their fans.
Both clubs offer a unique sporting product in the County - Carlisle United being the only professional Football League club and the Workington Comets the only speedway team. The clubs have worked hard recently to raise interest and attendances and feel that this partnership will help them achieve this goal.
Dick Young, commercial director at Brunton Park, and Steve Whitehead, Co-Promoter at the Comets, have been in discussion for some weeks in a bid to find a mutually beneficial way of promoting their respective sports with many benefits anticipated for their supporters.
As an opening offer from Workington Speedway, the promoters and fans would like to invite Carlisle United 2013/14 season ticket holders to Derwent Park on Sunday 11 August 2013 [7pm]. Production of a valid season ticket will gain entry to the speedway for free, when you will see the Comets take on the Scunthorpe Scorpions in a Premier League clash.
Steve Whitehead said: “This is a huge deal for us and I would like to thank Dick for his time and energy in getting to this point. We have lots of ideas on how we can work together which, in turn, will hopefully bring our fan base closer together.
“I’d like to think that with this partnership we will encourage our Comets fans to become United fans, and vice versa. There are some fixture clashes, but the speedway season runs outside the football season and there will be plenty of opportunity to follow both teams.”
Laura Morgan, owner and co-promoter at the Comets said: “This is really exciting for us and I hope Carlisle United are as excited about this partnership as we are. It can only help both clubs and I’d like to thank Carlisle United for working with us in this way.”
In return, Carlisle United will provide an opportunity for the Comets season ticket holders to attend a match - details of this offer are currently being finalised.
Dick Young Commercial Director said: “We are delighted to be embarking on a partnership with Workington Comets in a joint venture to encourage fans to enjoy both major sports in the County.
“Carlisle United has many fans in the west of the County who are also fans of the Workington Comets. This partnership is designed to bring both parties closer together as we move throughout the coming season.
“I will be working with Steve and Laura for the mutual benefit of both parties and their supporters.”
