Reaction from Berwick and Salmon
Youth captain Tom Berwick started things off in the best possible way in Wednesday’s Youth Alliance Cup northern area final against Walsall with an inswinging cross which flew into the bottom corner to give the young Cumbrians an important early lead.
We caught up with him after the game to get some reaction to his goal and to a win which now takes United into a National Final against Bristol Rovers in two week’s time.
“I thought the game went very well for us,” he said.
“We played well and we showed that we’re a good team. We gave it everything we’ve got and we stuck at it to see it through.
“That’s all you can ask from any team and I have to say that I’m buzzing right now. It was a superb win for us.”
“It was good for me to get the first goal because that’s a big one in any game,” he continued. “The important thing was the result and I’m just over the moon for everybody that we go it.”
And striker Alex Salmon, who netted a perfect penalty to double the lead just before half time, echoed those thoughts.
“Everyone worked hard and we got the result, and that puts us into the main final,” he said.
“I was pleased with the penalty. I always put them in the same place, I never change my mind, and that seems to work for me.
“I missed my chance at the end but I managed to set Kyle Dempsey up to kill things off, so I’ll take that as well.
“All we really wanted was to finish things off properly as a team and this win does that for us. We played well and we battled when we had to, so I think we thoroughly deserved the win.”
