Greg Abbott on the Tuesday evening draw
United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the 0-0 draw with Crewe ahead of the Wednesday morning training session.
He said: “Obviously we mentioned on Saturday that we wanted a clean sheet and that’s a positive we take from this one. However, we are still in a position where we are asking the players to be better in certain situations.
“We’ve seen them work hard and we’ve seen the honesty and we just need that little bit of extra quality. Once we get that more consistently we’ll be ok.
“We created some good chances and it became one of those games where either side could have nicked it. We know our group and we know what they can do and at times we are playing some really good football. There are other times when we need to be closer and tighter, but we’re getting there in terms of what we want from the group overall.
“Joe [Garner] has come in and he’s the type who will be in faces and cause problems. It’s always tough to play on the same day you come in but he’s fit and he just wants to be on the pitch. We took Jake [Jervis] off because we felt we needed to do something different and he will learn from that. He knows we want him to work a little bit harder because he can play a big role if he makes himself a handful. He was disappointed at having to come off but you want to see that and hopefully he’ll have a good reaction from it.
“We go into the weekend with an unbeaten run behind us and we can take confidence from that. We know we can be better and that’s the challenge we have put down for the players. Keep the levels of determination and honesty and find that bit of quality which will see us over the line.
“We’ve seen some good individual performances and Danny [Cadamarteri] fully deserved his man of the match. He’s setting a great example and doing a lot of hard work for the team. We’ve brought Brad [Potts] into midfield and there’s a versatility there which will stand him in good stead.
“We’re very hopeful we’ll be adding another attacking player to the mix before the weekend and we think that will help us. The midfield lads are back from their suspensions as well so it will be an interesting task for us in terms of selection. As ever we’ll be looking for the eleven which will win us the game.”
