The captain on the Saturday fixture
Captain Paul Thirlwell gave us his reaction to the home defeat at the hands of Crawley on Saturday.
He said: “It was a game we should have won but you get these games through the season.
“With chances and crosses into the box it’s probably the best we’ve done this season so it’s hard to take when you find yourself on the end of a defeat.
“I don’t think you could tell from the sidelines but there was quite a strong wind to deal with in the first half. We thought we settled and coped with that well and we created the better of the chances.
“We thought we’d just have to keep doing what we were doing in the second half and we’d get our goal, but it just wasn’t to be. They got a goal out of nothing and all of a sudden they have something to hang on to. In any game you know that the longer it stays at nil-nil the more likely it is that something will happen from a half chance. There’s certainly a feeling in the dressing room that it’s three points lost from this.
“When you look at the number of chances we created we’d have been disappointed if we’d walked away with a draw, so to be looking at a defeat is really disappointing. We’ve played well overall so we can take that forward as we go into our next run of games.
“The results away from home have been good for us recently but we want to get the consistency where we doing well wherever we are. I think we’re a good team and we’re at a stage now where we’re playing well.
“It’s good for us to have a game on Tuesday night because it gives us a chance to get out there and put it right. Bury haven’t had the best of starts but they have a new manager and they’ll want to come at us with them being at home. I’m sure if we go down there and play in the same way we have been in the last few games then we should be looking at a few goals and another good performance. On another day Joe [Garner] could have had a hat-trick – let’s hope that day is Tuesday night.”
