MANAGER: Reaction to the County game

Greg Abbott on the weekend

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the home defeat against Notts County at the weekend.

“I think I said it on Saturday that it was more than three points lost. The manner of the defeat means that we lose a little bit of the momentum and the belief outside the club that we are actually a good team. We haven’t been playing as well as we want to at home and people will judge you and talk about you on what they see.

“What we can’t get away from is that it was a really poor performance. If we could put our finger on why that happened we’d be able to avoid it, but it was one of those days where we had very few players who produced anywhere near the type of performance they are capable of.

“A result like that makes you look at how you prepared, but we had an excellent week of training and we were more then ready to go. That didn’t look to be the case on Saturday at all and we have to address that quickly.

“I think you have to put the home and away form down to coincidence. We’ve had runs of 15 or 16 unbeaten at Brunton Park in the recent past so it’s just a case of making sure you perform in every game. We’ve got to go to Bury on Tuesday night and put this right. We have to roll our sleeves up and show a determination to get back to playing the game the way we can.

“It was an easy victory for Notts County in the end and I don’t think anyone should come here and expect to be able to get the three points like that. As a manager, it’s the same as it is for the fans. You want to see your players giving it everything and we could accuse them of that not being the case in this one.

“It isn’t even a game where we can point to individuals for the mistakes they made. We’ve lost this as a group from the management team to every single player in the squad, and we have to put it right as a group.

“We had a long chat with the players after the game about the way this one went and we got together again this morning [Monday]. The focus has to be on doing the simple things and doing them properly. If we get that right then everything else falls into place and we can put this one behind us.”
