Kinder on the Penrith Rangers game
United coach Eric Kinder spoke to us about the Wednesday evening Cumberland Cup victory over Penrith Rangers.
He said: “The lads enjoyed the game and from a senior point of view it served a very good purpose.
“It got Rory Loy back on the pitch again and it was a good way for him to get back into a match environment. It has helped us to ease him into it even though we all know that he needs a little more time.
“It’s fantastic to see him back out there because it’s coming up to nearly eleven months since the initial injury happened. He’s a good player and this kind of thing will help him to build his confidence levels up before he gets into the action full time.
“From the youth side of things it’s fantastic for me to see Alex Salmon on the pitch. His finishing was incredible and it shows what a good player he is. We’ve missed that in our youth games so it’s good for us to be able to welcome him back.
“You can tell from the scoreline that it was an easy win for us. The finishing was clinical and I’d say that Dave Symington is a completely different player to the lad I had with me. He has developed really well with the first team squad and his crossing is a real asset. He now looks confident and self-assured and that’s nice to see.
“Kyle Dempsey got himself a good hat-trick and he has seven goals for the youth team as things stand right now. I set him a target at the start of the season of eight and he’s a cocky lad, so he has already knocked on my door to tell me to revise that figure. I took the wind out of his sails when I readjusted it to 16 and told him that the three from this game don’t count. The lad has a chance but I’m still not happy with his work-rate when we don’t have the ball. That needs to improve. He's getting there though so the signs are good.
“The youth team have had a tough week with the game at Crewe and then the Alliance Cup fixture at Rotherham. That's why it was good to see them do things properly in this one. It doesn’t matter who you play against, you still have to pass it and find space and you still have to do everything right.
“We decided to go to three at the back for the second half because we wanted to try something completely different. Kav came up with a formation which even Fabio Capello hasn’t used. In fact, he was explaining it to the lads and I didn’t have a clue what he meant, so I had to draw a diagram. It’s nice to be able to do that because it gives the lads something to think about in a game which is effectively already over.
“The only thing you can say at full time is well done. We did the important things in the right manner and we got some good goals along the way as well. You can’t ask for much more than that.”
