Eric Kinder on the Wanderers game
United's youth boss Eric Kinder gave us his reaction to the Saturday defeat against local side Warwick Wanderers as the pre-season preparations continue.
He said: "It was a very poor performance from us.
"We've got a few key players missing through injury, but that gives everybody else a chance to stake a claim for a starting place. However, I haven't been given too many team selection problems off the back of this one.
"When we play local sides we have to understand that they really want to beat us. They raise their game, as Wanderers did today, and we didn't compete with it. We didn't pass the ball well enough, we didn't keep our shape and we didn't do the stuff we've worked on for the past few weeks. Everything about this one was way short of what we expect.
"It has to be taken as a kick on the bum for a lot of these players. They haven't done themselves any favours at all, but full credit to Warwick Wanderers because they deserved to win the game.
"I think you learn a lot from every game you play but I have to admit, just after what we have to accept was a bad defeat, that I'm struggling to find any positives from this one.
"We didn't stick to our game plan and we came unstuck. Too many players wanted to do their own thing. Our centre forwards never spun into the channels and they didn't give their defence anything to think about at all, and that's really disappointing. The only time we did actually play any football, we scored, so that's something we do have to learn from.
"I know their keeper Jordan [English] really well from the Crown in Wetheral and he made three absolutely fantastic point blank saves. I'm going to have to suffer him talking about it for the next twelve months at least but, like I say, he was part of a team which deserved to beat us.
"We got caught trying to push forward after we equalised and they hit us on the break. We got away with it in the first half but they punished us in the second and it's a worry that they were able to get through us so easily.
"Fortunately we have another game on Tuesday night [Queen of the South, Raydale Park, kick off 7pm] and that gives us a chance to put this one behind us. We want to see a reaction and we want to see that things are starting to fall into place as we head towards the season kick off on 11 August."
