Manager on the Scunthorpe game
United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the trip to Scunthorpe on Saturday.
He said: “It was more disappointment for us last week but there were positives that we’ve taken into this week from it.
“Having Lee Miller back in the team is a huge bonus for us. We looked much better in the forward areas with the way he plays the game and it gave the midfield players the confidence to support the attack.
“Our Achilles heel has been the fact that we haven’t been able to keep our goal intact when we have had so much play. That is the really big disappointment for us and we know we have to get that part of it right.
“I know I keep saying this but the players have been absolutely fantastic in training. It was interesting today to see quite a few of them pumping their fists and rallying round the other lads, so there’s a real determination there to get things right.
“I think we’ll get another good performance because the attitude is right, but we need a result to go with that now. However, performances lead to results and we know we need to keep that level of play going, with the attitude and application, and we’ll be ok.
“This is one where we want to start at a good tempo and hopefully take it to them. We want to get them under pressure and hopefully we’ll get the goal to go with it. We’re on a run which needs something to be done, and quickly, so that’s what we’ll be trying to achieve. The lads really are a good group though and there’s no question that they’ll turn this round – no question at all.
“My job at the moment is to prepare them and get them ready to win a game. We do things properly every week and we’re doing everything we can to get a result. I have an excellent squad here and I know that they will sort things out.
“This will be a tough test for both sides on Saturday. Brian [Laws] is a top guy and I used to play with his assistant Russ [Wilcox] and they will be getting their team ready to get the points for their own reasons. They want to resurrect the situation they find themselves in as much as we want to push forward from where we are, so it will probably be a tight one.
“We’re looking forward to it though because we have players back and there’s a real focus on getting the win to give everyone a lift. Hopefully that’s what we’ll bring back with us tomorrow.”
