INTERVIEW: Just wanted to be out there

Josh Todd on his first team debut

First-year professional Josh Todd came off the bench during the second half of the Boxing Day victory over Hartlepool to make his debut for the first team following what has been a frustrating start to the campaign for the hard-working holding midfielder.

The highly-rated ball player is widely tipped to make an impression and we got his reaction to his first senior appearance shortly after full time on Wednesday.

“It’s felt like I’ve had to wait a long while for that and it’s nice to get it out of the way,” he admitted.

“Obviously I had a bad injury at the start of the season, and then I got back on terms with things after my loan at Workington, and it was nice to finally get my chance to get out there.

“It hasn’t been too frustrating because all you can do is work hard. But the other lads the same age as me have done so well and it’s been a case of wanting to be out there with them to show people what I can do.”

“The gaffer has said that he’s been impressed with me since I came back from Workington,” he added. “I’ve been in and around the first team a lot more and I knew it was just going to be a matter of time.”

“It was a good feeling when he called me over,” he explained. “I was a bit nervous initially but then I just wanted to be out there. The manager told me that their number two was getting in the hole too much and it was going to be my job to go in there and stop that from happening.

“It was nice to hear the reaction from the crowd when I went on and it was just great to be involved. Hopefully I can build things up from here and get a few more appearances between now and the end of the season.”

“The lads I came through the youth team with have been a big inspiration for me,” he said. “It’s been great to watch them and I just want to do the same as them. I don’t think the results have reflected the level of performances we’ve been putting in recently so hopefully I’ll be able to help along the way with that as well.”

“A nice thing was that I’ve just looked at my phone and there is a text from my mam and dad, so they’re obviously delighted for me,” he concluded. “They’ve been behind me every step of the way and I’m looking forward to seeing what they will have to say about it all.”
